L'omelette
Calgary, AB
Megs Benedict, leader of L’omelette, says she likes to get some cardio or at least a bit of yoga in before a live show to get the blood flowing. In between singing, playing saxophone, guitar and synth, she also likes to dance. It’s quite a workout with Benedict’s powerhouse soulful voice and multiple instruments complemented by guitarist Alex Klipper’s tastefully rhythmic riffs, Matthew Lowe’s melodic bass lines and Pete Cormier’s driving beats. The band formed in 2017 and after their 2021 EP Cigarette Party, L’omelette released their first full length release, You Are Here in 2022. It’s a heady mix of jazz, funk, soul and French pop ranging from the off-time dance romps to the breezy pop. Their new release Il Faut Qu’on Bouge pokes at the tender parts of humanity, to a groove. Lyricist Meg Thompson asks inclusive and empowering questions about our society's wellness through edgy lenses, with comments on fast fashion, body image, the rejection of socioeconomic pressures, and the delicate relationships between self and others. These themes are encapsulated in punchy synth and guitar-driven dance-pop and post-punk numbers.
