It seems apropos that Donovan Woods’ label is called Meant Well, given the beacon of swirling folk, country and pop this steady, likeable Toronto singer-songwriter has been creating since bursting on the scene over 18 years ago. His most recent album – 2020’s Without People, is an apt title, given it was recorded remotely by Woods and company. Of course, he’s arrived where he is with people – an ever-growing fanbase that loves his quirkily conventional songs that take standard pop structures and stretches them just far enough to excite a refined ear without losing some semblance of accessibility. Masterful storyteller Woods is one of music’s most vulnerable creators who’s not afraid to bear his soul in an emotionally gritty way.
