Burnstick
St. Claude, MB
Singer/songwriters Jason Burnstick and Nadia Gaudet aren’t just married on paper – with twinned harmonies that slide along notes like two mirrors facing each other, they are married in music, too. It was meant to be, as the couple wrote a song together on their first date, have separate recording studios on either side of the house, and in 2019 put out their first album, Juno-nominated Kîyânaw, meaning “us” in nêhiyawêwin (Cree), a nod to Jason’s heritage and upbringing on the Alexander First Nation and complementing Nadia’s Francophone-Métis background.
While Burnstick’s songs won folk music awards, their songs rove over vast musical territory. Although Jason is a ‘60s Scoop survivor, the music turns away from darkness leaning on lyrics both hopeful and uplifting. Listening, you marvel that something so delicate, so fragile, can feel so grounded. Even songs about the mundane - like hitting the ground running for the daily grind – travel in nature and beauty.
Vocals entwined, hearts entwined, lives entwined, Burnstick offers unity as a way to meet uncertainties with grace and love. - Mary-Lynn Wardle
